Doug Coulter featured in Deal Street Asia’s LP column
Deal Street Asia interviewed Doug Coulter, Partner at LGT Capital Partners, for its LP column. He highlighted the fact that Asia’s private equity industry is well positioned for the future as China, India and Japan offer unique opportunities. Doug also emphasized the need to pick deals wisely and to only raise as much as the market justifies.
Doug noted that India and Japan are currently in the investor spotlight. However, he underscored the importance of having a well-balanced portfolio across Asia Pacific, rather than focusing on just two regions. Against this backdrop, he explained that LGT Capital Partners divides its Asia investment strategy into two parts, with 50% allocated to growth markets such as China and India, while the other 50% is focused on developed buyout markets such as Japan, Australia and Korea.
In terms of deal size, Doug said that he sees a stark contrast between small to mid-market deals and mega deals, especially in terms of entry multiples in the region. Looking at entry points, he added that the most attractive opportunities at present lie in co-investments and secondaries, with regional differences. Doug also pointed out that private equity is inherently pro-cyclical, so disciplined decision-making is critical.
